2026 eSIM APN Manual Setup Guide: Fix Auto-Config Failures on iPhone & Android

Your eSIM scanned fine, the profile installed, the carrier name appears — yet data refuses to load. The most likely culprit: the Access Point Name (APN) did not auto-configure. This guide shows you exactly where to find APN settings on iOS 18 and Android 15, which values to enter, and how to verify the fix.

What Is APN and Why Does It Matter for eSIM?

An APN (Access Point Name) is a gateway string your phone uses to connect to the carrier's data network. For physical SIMs it is written on the card; for eSIMs it is usually pushed automatically when the profile downloads. When automatic push fails — due to carrier server delays, iOS/Android OS version mismatches, or regional network restrictions — you must enter it manually.

Common signs of an APN problem after eSIM activation:

  • Carrier name shows in status bar but data icon (4G/5G) is absent or shows an X.
  • Mobile data toggle is on, roaming is on, but browser times out.
  • Hotspot option is greyed out even though the plan includes it.

Step 1 — Confirm eSIM Profile Is Active (Both Platforms)

Before touching APN settings, confirm the eSIM profile is set as the primary data line:

  • iPhone: Settings → Cellular → scroll down to your eSIM label → tap it → enable "Turn On This Line" and set "Default Voice Line" or "Default Data" to the eSIM if you want data on it.
  • Android: Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → select eSIM → toggle "Use SIM" on → set as "Preferred SIM for data".
Tip: On dual-SIM phones, Android sometimes silently keeps the physical SIM as the default data line after adding an eSIM. Always double-check the data SIM preference.

Step 2 — Find the APN Value for Your eSIM Provider

Every carrier publishes its APN in the confirmation email, the app, or the help center. For most eSimAce plans the APN is one of:

Region / ProviderAPN ValueAuth Type
Global (default)data.esimace.comNone
Japan plansplus.4gNone
USA plansbroadbandNone
Europe plansinternetNone

If unsure, check the eSimAce Help Center or your purchase confirmation email for the exact APN string.

Step 3 — Enter APN on iPhone (iOS 18 / iOS 19)

Apple restricts direct APN editing on locked devices. For unlocked iPhones and most eSIM-only plans:

  1. Go to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Network (or "Mobile Data Network" in some regions).
  2. Under the Cellular Data section, clear the APN field and type your carrier's APN string exactly (no spaces, case-sensitive).
  3. Leave Username and Password blank unless your carrier specifies otherwise.
  4. Scroll down to the Personal Hotspot section and enter the same APN if the hotspot field is empty.
  5. Press the Home button or swipe up to exit Settings — iOS saves automatically.
  6. Toggle Airplane Mode on for 10 seconds, then off. Wait 30 seconds for the connection to re-register.
Warning: "Cellular Data Network" is hidden on carrier-locked iPhones. If you cannot find this menu, the phone is carrier-locked and the eSIM may not work without an unlock.

Step 4 — Enter APN on Android 15 / Android 16

  1. Open Settings → Network & Internet → Internet (or "Mobile Network" depending on manufacturer).
  2. Tap the gear icon next to your eSIM carrier name.
  3. Tap Access Point Names → press the + or "Add" button.
  4. Fill in:
    • Name: any label, e.g. "eSimAce"
    • APN: the exact string from your provider
    • APN type: default, supl, mms (if hotspot needed add ,dun)
    • Protocol / Roaming Protocol: IPv4/IPv6
  5. Tap the three-dot menu → Save.
  6. Select the new APN as active (radio button).
  7. Restart mobile data: toggle it off and back on, or reboot the device.

Step 5 — Verify and Common Error Codes

After saving, open a browser and load a simple page. If still failing:

Network Selection: Auto vs. Manual

When APN is correct but you still cannot connect, the device may have latched onto a non-compatible local carrier. Fix it:

  • iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Network Selection → toggle "Automatic" off → wait for scan → pick the carrier your eSIM is tied to.
  • Android: Settings → Mobile Network → Network operators → Search networks → select manually.

After manual selection, re-enable Automatic — the phone will remember the preference until a restart.

Reset Network Settings (Last Resort)

If nothing else works, resetting network settings clears all Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and cellular configs — then you re-enter the APN from scratch:

  • iPhone: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings.
  • Android: Settings → General Management → Reset → Reset Network Settings.
Warning: Resetting network settings on iPhone does NOT delete eSIM profiles — they stay installed. On Android, some manufacturers do delete eSIM profiles on reset; confirm with your device manual first.

FAQ

Can I configure APN before landing at my destination?

Yes — you can install the eSIM profile and configure APN at home over Wi-Fi. The APN settings save locally and will apply as soon as you arrive and mobile data activates.

My iPhone shows "LTE" but no data — is APN the issue?

Usually yes. The LTE signal is from the carrier; the data session is blocked because the APN gateway is either missing or wrong. Re-enter the APN as described in Step 3.

Does eSimAce send the APN automatically?

For most plans, yes — the APN is pushed inside the eSIM profile. If it fails to configure, check the confirmation email or the eSimAce Help Center for the manual value.

What is the difference between APN and roaming?

Roaming controls whether your device is allowed to use a foreign carrier's network at all. APN controls how your device authenticates and routes data through that network. Both must be enabled for international eSIM data to work.
